Egypt has uncovered a spy ring in which the Mossad used an Egyptian businessman and two "Israelis" to recruit Egyptian, Syrian, and Lebanese telecoms experts as well as company owners, in order to execute intelligence operations in Syria after meeting with Mossad agents there.
Hisham Badawi, the state prosecutor, said Tareq Abdel Razeq Hussein Hassan, a 37-year-old owner of an import-export firm, was arrested in August.

He is accused of accepting money (37 thousand dollars) from the "Israelis" in exchange for identifying Egyptians working for telecommunications companies in Egypt, Syria and Lebanon, who could be recruited to spy for "Israel".

"The general prosecutor ordered the transfer of three accused persons, who included two "Israeli" fugitives and one detained Egyptian, to be sent before the emergency state security supreme criminal court on the charges of spying for "Israel" and harming the country's national interests," reported MENA, Egypt's state news agency.

The official revealed that the suspects set up offices in Egypt, Britain, "Israel", and Gaza to record officials' phone conversations and collect information about Japanese and Chinese tourists visiting the Sinai Peninsula.

According to a court statement, Razzak's first contact with Mossad was in 2007, when he received an email while looking for work in China. The same year he met the "Israeli" agents in Thailand, where he was asked to set up an import-export business back home as a cover for his real work with Mossad.

Through the Internet, Razzak's company looked for Syrian suppliers of olive oil and pastry, allowing him to travel to Syria several times to look for recruits. Following instructions from his two accomplices, during one of his visits he forwarded a sum of money to a Syrian agent of Mossad on behalf of the two accused "Israelis".

He later set up a website that offered telecommunications jobs in Egypt, Syria and Lebanon, with the aim of looking for more potential recruits, the statement said.
