Egypt's Armed Forces has so far issued two communiqués in which it declared defending the legitimate rights of the people.

"Communiqué number one" of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces on Thursday read ""Based on the responsibility of the armed forces and its commitment to protect the people and its keenness to protect the nation... and in support of the legitimate demands of the people," the army "will continue meeting on a continuous basis to examine measures to be taken to protect the nation and its gains and the ambitions of the great Egyptian people."

It was remarkable that the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces convened in the absence of President Hosni Mubarak and VP Omar Suleiman.

In a second communiqué on Friday, the army leaders also pledged to support work towards peaceful transition of power, in the light of Mubarak handing over some powers to Omar Suleiman, the vice-president. The Egyptian army pledged that the country's emergency law will be lifted, but only "as soon as current circumstances end".

Also, the communiqué said that "the honest men who called for an end to corruption and for reform" will not be prosecuted.

The communiqué stressed it would not arrest those calling for reform, but warned against any "harm to the safety and security of the nation," adding "Regarding the latest consecutive developments taking place which will determine the destine of the country, and in context of following on the ongoing internal and foreign events, as well as due to our belief in our national responsibilities of maintaining stability and security in the region, the council decided to take care of the people's legitimate demands and realize them.
