Minister Sahnawi: Gov’t to Tackle Telecoms Data, GSM Networks File
In an interview with as-Safir Lebanese daily, Sahnawi stressed on the "importance of setting specific controls, especially that law does not cover us as a Telecoms. Ministry, and does not stipulate anything named "data"".
"On my part, I sign tens of requests that ask for the "data", knowing that I don't see any security excuse for that. From here I will be presenting this issue in the cabinet, especially that the break point between security and freedoms is specified by the government, which should adopt the suitable decisions, and set the framework to control this issue", Minister Sahnawi asserted.

Regarding renewing the operation contracts of the two Beirut-based GSM companies "MTC" and "ALFA", Minister Sahnawi affirmed that the negotiations with both companies were not easy, and they took some time, however a convincing resolution was reached.

He confirmed that the aforementioned companies agreed on enhancing the conditions which the Ministry has submitted to renew the contract.
Sahnawi affirmed that meanwhile, if the government does not approve renewing the contracts with the GSM companies, the state will then reinstate the management of the mobile phone sector. In this context, Lebanon's Telecoms Minister believed that the state firm is "qualified to run the network, and the companies themselves are qualified, and we would only need to choose the people of qualification to manage it".
