Local Editor
Syrian state TV says two bomb attacks have been carried out in the capital, Damascus, killing 40 people and wounding 170 others. The "terrorist attacks" were carried out in the south of Damascus early on Thursday, according to the state TV.
Commenting on the blasts, General Robert Mood, Head of the UN Observers Mission to Syria, offered his heartfelt condolences to the Syrian people and to the bereaved families of the victims .
Gen. Mood, in a press statement at the site of the two explosions, called on all those who stand behind these explosions, whether they are inside Syria or outside, to realize that such explosions cause but the more of suffering to the Syrians, and that they should stop these heinous acts and give a chance to the Syrians to go forward in a peaceful direction without having the innocents being killed.
For his part, Russian ambassador to Lebanon Alexander Zasypkin called on the Syrian opposition to cut its relations with the "armed groups" in the unrest-ridden country.
"I call on the Syrian political opposition to cut its relations with armed groups in Syria," Zasypkin told al-Manar TV.
"When violence increases, peaceful protest movement transforms into civil war," Zaspykin said.
The diplomat also said that Russia wanted the "bloodshed" in Syria to stop immediately, noting that Moscow was working with the Syrian government to help resolve its current crisis.
