It seems that the issue of the Lebanese detainees in Azaz is witnessing a major improvement.
In details, negotiations led by the Director General of the Lebanese Public Security, Major General Abbas Ibrahim, with the Syrian authorities resulted into the following: A number of Syrian women prisoners in the Syrian jails will be resealed, based on the list the Turkish side handed to the Lebanese authorities.
There are nine hostages held by armed groups in Syria. Thus, General Ibrahim led the negotiations, that according to sources, are to lead to the release of some of the Lebanese hostages in a possible first round swap.
In this context, the member of the follow-up committee of Azaz detainees, Hayat Awali, confirmed that "during the last meeting with the families of the hostages, Maj. Gen. Ibrahim revealed that the kidnappers have concerns that the Syrian authorities won't fulfill their promises regarding the release of women from the Syrian prisons."
In an interview with al-Ahed news site, Awali highlighted that "this led to procrastination in this file."
"Today, Ibrahim launched the initiative and made the Syrian regime agree to release a batch of prisoners," she said, hoping that "this will make the kidnappers release some of the Lebanese hostages."
She further elaborated that "the families of the kidnapped men wait the fulfillment of the promise, concerning the release of four of the detainees."
As she hoped that this file will end soon, Awali hailed the extraordinary effort that Ibrahim is doing to secure the release of the Lebanese hostages.
