To whom it may concern ...if you had bargained on a change of policy by this current and the upcoming US administrations on Lebanon, you are undoubtedly mistaken.
This was the message conveyed by the US through the head of the Lebanese Forces Samir Geagea who just came back to Lebanon from a tour of Uncle Sam's officials, excluding President George Bush. Geagea also described the US conduct in Lebanon in the past three years, including the year 2006 when thousands of Lebanese were killed by US smart bombs, as honorable.
So, Geagea is back to Lebanon with a mission, whether direct or indirect, to polish the picture of Bush's current administration.
Of course, Geagea came back, as most other Lebanese politicians do, empty handed with mere political promises he describes as "important," mainly: no settlement of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon! He said it is "impossible" to naturalize Palestinian refugees in Lebanon. The Lebanese constitution bans it, even if all of America wants to naturalize Palestinians in Lebanon, this wouldn't happen." "The Americans understand details of the Lebanese situation that doesn't allow for naturalization of Palestinians," he added. Paradoxically, Geagea pretended to have forgotten US proposals to compensate Palestinian refugees, morally and materially, each in his host country; a clear indication to a US and, of course, 'Israeli' endeavor to burry alive the notion of the Palestinian refugees' right to return to their homeland.
Speaking about the outcome of his visit to the UN headquarters in New York, Geagea explained the nature of the political role that tribunal of international character to try suspects in the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Martyr Rafik Hariri; it will not only look into Hariri's murder, he said. "The tribunal wouldn't just deal with the Hariri assassination, but would also shed light on what has happened in Lebanon in the past 30 years." "Nothing would stop the tribunal. It will be an international tribunal that would issue a charge sheet this year," he said.
Geagea did not forget to tackle the results of the Arab Summit held last week in Damascus. He said it was a "failed" summit because of what he called "the absence of major Arab states." The Lebanese Forces chief did not observe the stature of Arab leaders who attended the summit and the representatives of others who rarely take part in any Arab summit. His ally, the minister of communications in Fouad Saniora's unconstitutional government, Marwan Hmedeh had also caused the same embarrassment and described the Damascus summit as the "summit of dwarves."
Geagea, nevertheless, added that Syria cannot assume the Arab summit's presidency.
Geagea said he demanded the international community help Lebanon in "controlling the Lebanese-Syrian border since all efforts to work out a settlement with Syria to the borders issue have been blocked."
Another demand Geagea said he will make to the UN Security Council is to adopt a stand "on the Lebanese detainees in Syrian jails." He added that he raised the issue of Lebanese detainees in 'Israeli' jailes, but eventually failed to urge the UNSC to adopt a resolution to secure their release. Geagea and his Lebanese Forces face charges in Lebanon for handing over Lebanese citizens to the 'Israeli' army during the 'Israeli' occupation of Lebanon.
On the occupied Shebaa Farms, Geagea said he prefers this issue be solved through negotiations.
"Not one drop of blood should be shed over reclaiming the Shebaa farms as long as political and diplomatic negotiations are capable of settling this issue." Geagea seems to have forgotten that 'Israel', so far, hasn't respected UN Security Council resolutions including resolution 425 that stipulates the withdrawal of 'Israeli' occupation forces from territories occupied after 1967, which the Shebaa Farms are part of.
