Russian Ambassador to Lebanon Sergei Bukin said that his country was against any foreign interference in Lebanese affairs.
After meeting with Prime Minister Fouad Saniora, Bukin said that Russia had always expressed its concern over the "unstable situation in Lebanon" and reiterated his country's belief in the urgent need for the election of a Lebanese president as soon as possible and based on national consensus.
"There is an initiative by the Arab League, which enjoys the support of the international community and Russia," Bukin noted. "The initiative still exists, and we hope the Arab League officials and Secretary General (Amr Moussa) will continue mediation efforts through this initiative," he continued, adding he hoped a solution to the political impasse in Lebanon would be reached through compromise.
On whether work was ongoing to hold a peace conference in Moscow, Bukin replied, "We are discussing the proposal with all parties, but the agenda has not crystallized yet, nor have we determined a date for the meeting."
