After meeting with Venezuelian ambassador to Lebanon Souad Karam, former minister Wiam Wahhab said he saw "the beginning of a new phase" after US Assistant Secretary of State David Welch said the coming summer in Lebanon would be a "hot" one.
Wahhab also said Welch and UN envoy to Lebanon for the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1559 Terje Roed-Larsen were responsible for "incitement against the resistance in Lebanon" based on "lies and fiction."
"This is clearly a project of internationalization," he added in reference to the Lebanese dossier, "and perhaps the beginning of the amendment of resolution 1701." Wahhab rejected any amendments to UNSCR 1701, including the expansion of UN Interim Forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL) operations.
"Everyone must be aware of the sensitivity of this subject, and the emergency forces in the south must not turn into spy forces that collect information on behalf of ‘Israel' or work against the resistance," Wahhab said.
"That could topple resolution 1701 entirely," he added.
Wahhab accused Saudi Arabia of standing side by side with the American plan for Lebanon, which he said was to exacerbate inter-Lebanese disputes. "This was evident in the invitation to the international meeting held in Kuwait and the discussion of the Lebanese situation."
"The Saudi Arabian position spoke for itself when it refused to set a date for the visit of Speaker Nabih Berri," Wahhab said.
