SIDON: It was hard for 18-year-old Sahar Zabad to recall the 12 hours that she lived under the rubble of a four-storey building in the Sidon region of Ghazieh during the summer war of 2006. "They were horrible and indescribable hours," she told The Daily Star after the passing of a year since the Ghazieh massacre took place on August 7, 2006.
"I felt as if those 12 hours were years and years," she added. "I went through very difficult moments."
She made her comments before heading to hospital to undergo a foot surgery atop numerous other operations on different parts of her body.
Describing her ordeal as a "nightmare," Zabad said she had lain under the wreckage near the body of her aunt, cousin and other family members.
"I felt that I was very close to death," she added.
"I was not trapped between life and death as the saying goes but between death and death," she said "I am still alive thanks to a divine power."
Zabad also expressed gratitude for rescuers who, she said, "tried to create means of communication with me."
"They supported me morally to help me stay alive and provided me with oxygen to keep me from losing consciousness," she said.
Her cousin Mohammad Shaer had also escaped death.
"While being under rubble, I wanted to save the life of my nephew Hadi Jaafar but I couldn`t because my foot has been amputated," he said.
"God was with me and saved my life," he added.
During last summer`s war, Ghazieh came under "Israeli" air strikes on August 7 that killed 18 people. "Israeli" warplanes targeted the village the next day as residents held funerals for the victims, killing another 14 people
