Drag the Drug Out !
"It is about a transnational cross-denominational threat that affects all, pro-government and opposition, political parties whatever the intellectual orientations. It is the subject of drugs, pills in particular. The new thing about this subject is that in the past anyone wanting to smoke cannabis in their cigarettes used to find it difficult to procure, or to find substances to sniff; such habits were quickly discovered in the home or school environment, but unfortunately, the new invention in the country today is the pills. This has unfortunately entered secondary and high school levels and universities, and this is not an exaggeration." said Hizbullah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, on the 11th of November during his speech in commemoration of Martyr's Day.
After Sayyed Hassan's speech, eyes were opened wide to this subject. Many took it into consideration by following it up through various means of investigations, starting from their own houses. The investigation took them to places they never expected.
"I never thought my son would be one of the addicts", said a mother of a 20 year old addict, who found her son half dead in his bedroom due to Heroin overdose. With tears flowing down her face, and trembling hands, the mother added," My son started changing ever since he started university. I never knew anything about him since then, except that he's always out with his weird friends".
After seeing "B.S." the 20 year old who almost lost his life, many questions were left unanswered, for his body was too pale and skinny, and it wasn't humane to make him go through any of the investigation. But you can see from his cold tired eyes that he regrets his drug experience.
"B.S" wasn't the only case, as his mother said. He was always out with "weird" friends. Friends of different sects and religions, different styles and divisions, but they all shared one habit, the habit of "DRUGS".
What are drugs? From where do they come from? Why are they spread that easily? The more we are aware of these things the better off we are.
A drug is a chemical substance that affects the processes of the mind or body. It comes in different kinds: Cannabis which is a plant used in 2 forms: Marijuana and Hashish, Cocaine, Heroin, Ecstasy known as "E" and LSD (the latest drug imported from Europe). All of these are the weapons used to fight the brains of our soceity so that it can be manipulated with easily.
"Y.C" a 26 year old girl had the guts to share her experience of drug addiction, " I never knew what it was to be lost, not until I started doing drugs" she said. "Y.C" started smoking Hashish when she was 19 years old. "I started in high school after meeting a couple of guys that I thought looked cool. They introduced me to different kinds of drugs, and I saw it harmless and fun" she added, while lighting a cigarette. "Years passed by and it was getting harder and harder for me to stop, I needed help", she said.
"Y.C" saw her life falling apart, she lost control. So, she decided to search for an organization that can help her, knowing that her family would probably kill her, had they known. "Y.C" was lucky to find a Lebanese addiction center "Skoun".
"Skoun" helped "Y.C" detoxify her body and they accompanied her throughout the recovery process, until she was free of addiction and was able to live her life in a productive and stable way. "Y.C" said that after going to the center she realized that she wasn't the only one. She met many of her age with the same addiction problem. "Y.C" ended her story by saying, "Our lives are too precious to waste it on something so cheap. I learned it's never too late".
The drug abuse is an increasing problem in our affluent societies and carries great social and economic costs through its impacts on crime and health. By launching campaigns, hand in hand with the Lebanese government and NGOs many achievements can be done.
