Disarm the Settlers!

written by Fawwaz Traboulsi
He who describes Benjamin Netanyahu's decision to freeze construction of settlements in the West Bank (excluding Quds [Jerusalem]) as a heavy joke is not wrong. This initiative by the "Israeli" Prime Minister was in response to an unbalanced invitation launched by President Barack Obama that calls for swapping a freeze on "Israeli" settlement for two Arab initiatives: the resumption of Palestinian-"Israeli" negotiations and the implementation of wide strides by Arab regimes in normalizing relations with "Israel."
The U.S. president quoted what suited him of the Arab initiative, attributed to King Abdullah and one of the famous American journalists known for his volatility.
This Arab Peace Initiative, as is known, offers full normalization and recognition of "Israel" by Arab States in all fields of economic, political, cultural, diplomatic and public information, in exchange for full "Israeli" withdrawal from Arab territories, the establishment of a Palestinian state and for resolving the issues of Quds and the refugees.
Regardless of opinions held towards this Arab peace initiative, and whether it is able to fulfill the minimum of national Palestinian and Arab rights, it is useful to recall this original initiative in its completeness to reflect the amount of deletions practiced by American diplomacy.
What happened to President Obama's initiative?
After Benjamin Netanyahu initial negative response, and after stalling, resisting and delaying, he decided on freezing settlements in the West Bank for a period of ten months, with the exception of Quds settlements. Deputy Prime Minister Moshe Ya'alon used enough arrogance and childishness in his description of the amount of luck Obama's suggested freeze has in being implemented, to say: "All we wanted was to throw a bone to the hungry U.S. Administration"!
To comment, we cannot say to this imperialist-lord more than congratulations on having this small Nazi partner bullying him?
Put it another, can you imagine a situation in which an Arab or an Iranian official using such tone or phrases to describe the U.S. ruler!
Whatever the case, it seems that "the bone" was sufficient to satisfy the hunger of the U.S. Administration, which declared that it has no objections to the decision of extending generous assistance to the settlers. Such assistance can only be cashed in the area of financing settlement expansion!
In line with the follow-up on swapping settlement-freeze for normalization, it is useful to bring to mind that official "Israeli" sources recently spoke of existing strong activities and economic relations and trade exchange, hidden and covert, direct or by proxy, between "Israel" and "all" Arab and Islamic countries, to quote the same source, with the exception of Iran, Syria and Lebanon.
This means that certain Arab parties' commitment to take progressive normalization steps has occurred as a warm welcoming to Netanyahu's heavy joke and in compliance to American pressure.
In addition, the 'oil-rich' press or the press connected to "moderate" Arab regimes invested vast efforts to cover up those trade relations via thick veils of silence and through diverting attention, by the usual wordage about a need for America to pressure "Israel" to do this, that and the other.
However, there is no doubt that this week's heroes were the settlers themselves, for in response to the "Israeli" government decision to freeze temporary settlements, a large number of mayors and heads of settlements and municipalities declined to even deliver the halt-construction orders to the settlers. They likened this decision to the "White paper" used by the British government in 1937 to restrict Jewish immigration to Palestine.
That "White paper" is considered of the eighth andirons in the Zionist settlement dictionary. As for the few settlers who did receive the government orders, they tore it up in full view of the police officers, officials and the media.
The settlers' news does not end there.
Following religious opinions a number of rabbis issued permitting the killing of Palestinian civilians, including children, new waves of opinions or fatwa came to light. One of which gives the "Israeli" soldiers associated with them-most of whom are settlers and followers of extremist right wing religious parties-the right to reject settlement evacuation orders of their military commanders if such orders are issued.
It is noteworthy that War Minister Ehud Barak's reaction to this incitement against army hierarchy or orders was low profile and soft.
Another religious permission permits settlers to harvest Palestinian owned olive trees. Such religious analysis can only be explained through the deep rooted "Israeli" "tradition" of land theft, and the looting and destruction of its crops.
In addition to these religious permissions two new prominent practices appeared in this past week, the first was when "Israeli" settlers in the Quds force evacuated two hundred Palestinian families from their homes and occupied them, and the second was the burning of a mosque in the West Bank.
A senior "Israeli" Jewish rabbi denounced the act, only to quickly deny the fire arsonist act was committed by "Israelis!"
Has it ever occurred for Arab officials to demand the United States, Europe, or the international community to disarm "Israeli" settlers' militia groups?
Arab officials readily accept all American, European and international arguments and calls to disarm "Hizbullah", who's accused of "Assaulting" "Israel!" under international UN resolution 1701, and of being "a threat to the security of the Lebanese and their neighbors"!
Arabs accept these definitions, defend and make excuses and justifications for them.
In no way does the writer here liken the combatants of the to the Islamic resistance to "Israeli" settlers, but, why do we not demand the disarming of "Israeli" settlers, even if only to expose the double standard policy, to strike this one-eyed international justice with the 'shoes' it deserves?!
These threaten "the security of their neighbors" the Palestinian Arabs, enough evidence and proof there, they carry unlicensed militia weapons, in addition to making security threats to Palestinians and Arabs neighbors, they also threaten the security of "Israelis"; was it not one of them who assassinated one of the heads of the State of "Israel"?
Hence, no magic solutions, developmental strategies or projects this week, just a small tactical suggestion, and an even smaller question to go with it, so that we do not continue to blame our rulers alone and forget our own responsibilities, mistakes and shortcomings.
The question is addressed to the enthusiasts in the Moroccan Arab quarters, whose delusions and obsessive speculations increase incrementally and proportionally with how much farther away they depart from the Palestinian and Lebanese battlefield: Why have you in your thousands failed to prevent the visit of war criminal Tzipi Livni, to the Kingdom of Morocco- an Arab League member, where she enjoyed full royal hospitality? Why have you failed, where a British judge- along with the state of law he represents- succeeded to prevent her from entering the United Kingdom?!
