Obama Approves “Non-Lethal” Aid to Syrian Rebels
Local Editor
US President Barack Obama has approved "non-lethal" aid, including communications equipment and medicines, for the rebels in Syria.
A US official -who spoke on the case of anonymity in the news reports, said on Friday that Washington is "providing non-lethal material assistance to the non-violent, political opposition."
The official added that the move was "consistent with... efforts to support" the Syrian opposition. "It is likely deliveries of this assistance will increase over time."
Obama pledged to send the aid package to the Syrian rebels in March.
The approval of the aid package came one day after a ceasefire went into effect in Syria, in line with a six-point peace plan proposed by UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan.
The US administration had previously indicated it would take such a step, in line with an initiative by the international "Friends of Syria" group to bolster opponents of President Bashar al-Assad's regime.
Kofi Annan said on Wednesday that he had received a written pledge from the Syrian foreign ministry to "cease all military fighting throughout the Syrian territory as of 6:00 a.m. tomorrow (0300 GMT)."
The Syrian government, however, had issued a warning that security forces would "respond proportionately to any attacks carried out by armed terrorist groups against civilians, government forces or public and private property."
On Thursday, the Syrian opposition broke the ceasefire when armed terrorists targeted a military bus with an explosive device at the southern bypass area, near al-Nirab Airport Bridge in Syria's second largest city Aleppo, as reported by Syrian state TV.
