At least 28 people have been killed and many others have been injured in separate attacks in Iraq.

The deadliest attack, which took place in a commercial street in a northwestern neighborhood of Baghdad on Wednesday, killed 16 people and injured 42 others, according to security and medical sources. Many of those killed were at a wedding party that was passing by as the explosion occurred.

Two bomb blasts in a commercial area in the western Baghdad killed 9 people and wounded 15 others, while in the city of Abu Ghraib, west of the capital, an army brigadier general was shot dead at his home.

At least 28 Killed, Dozens Injured: Iraq BlastsIn Baquba, some 50 kilometers north of the capital, two roadside bombs exploded near a football pitch, killing one person and wounding nine others.

Meanwhile, Iraqi security services said on Thursday that 16 members of a terrorist network had been arrested in connection with bomb attacks across the country. Also, security forces have tightened measures to prevent such violence.

On May 2, the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) said April had been the deadliest month in Iraq since 2008 as terrorist acts killed over 700 people and injured more than 1, 630 others across the country.

Violence has increased in Iraq since December 2011, when an arrest warrant was issued for fugitive Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi, who has been charged with running a death squad targeting Iraqi officials and Shia Muslims.
