"Israeli" media ridicules Olmert war achievements
Source: Al-Manar, 6-12-2007
"About a year and a half after the end of the Second Lebanon War, an 'Israeli' chief officer in the north admits that Hizbullah is on the border gathering information and able to launch an attack at any time," an "Israeli" TV anchor said.
The "Israeli" television said the army's admittance about the return of Hizbullah constitutes a severe blow to "Israeli" Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's allegations that one of the second Lebanese war achievements was removing Hizbullah away from the border.
"The recent war which everybody says happily is a failure, has pushed Hizbullah away from the north border and replaced it with the Lebanese army and the international forces," Olmert said in March 2007.
The "Israeli" television said that the "Israeli" army was forced to yield to Hizbullah's return to the border, and in turn bolstered their surveillance system with developed
Equipment and human resources to monitor the resistance fighter's activities and bridge the gaps through which they could penetrate.
Lieutenant Colonel Amehi- chief of surveillance unit in the north - said that "undoubtedly, the focus remains on Hizbullah. Apparently they are normal citizens, in conformity with regulations and conventions; they don't carry arms, but we can really see a relationship between their activities and the characteristics of the military activity, starting from information gathering in the full sense of the word. Hizbullah is able to launch an attack whenever they want to, and will do so under circumstances it views convenient."
For his part, Lieutenant Yelna Sheirman- chief of surveillance operation in the northern borders said "whenever we find somebody approaching the barbed wire and acting in an unusual manner whether digging or making infrastructure works, we think that Hizbullah is reorganizing itself increasingly near the border line and other villages."
The "Israeli" television said that "Israeli" soldiers, who are watching every move on the Lebanese side, are facing big difficulties in monitoring Hizbullah fighters wearing civilian clothes and not holding arms.
Younie Shtain- Officer in the surveillance unit - said that the "people on the border are not just shepherds or farmers; those are people working for Hizbullah. Hizbullah exists behind the border and we see them every day.
The "Israeli" television concluded that not only did Hizbullah's fighters return to the border but also they are touring there fearlessly. It's possible to observe Hizbullah fighters monitoring and recording the "Israeli" presence at the northern border.
