Hizbullah foreign affairs official Nawwaf Moussawi said that some countries were pursuing policies that aimed to provoke and divide the Christian community in Lebanon, and thus weaken its tradition role, while threatening the very notion of Lebanese coexistence.

After meeting with Spanish Ambassador Miguel Benzo Perea on Wednesday, Moussawi said that Lebanon's Sunni and Shiaa communities were also being "persistently provoked by a hostile policy toward Lebanon and its people."

"Attempts to control Lebanon and use it to disturb Syria's stability and security should cease because the country's interest is in bolstering friendly, cooperative and coordinative relations," Moussawi said, before warning that history proved that "any attempt for hegemony" necessarily leads "to crisis, confrontation and struggle."

The Hizbullah official hailed Free Patriotic Movement leader Michel Aoun's Wednesday visit to Damascus.
