Jumblatt Warns against Western Openness to Damascus?!
Source: As-Safir, 11-12-2008
Democratic Gathering MP Walid Jumblatt doesn't feel comfortable with the ongoing Western openness to Damascus...
It's Jumblatt, personally, who admitted, once again, this truth, expressing worries of the potential repercussions of such openness, thus favoring the policy of isolating Syria within the international community, a policy that has proved its ineffectiveness for years.
Speaking to Lebanese daily As-Safir on Thursday, Jumblatt said that he raised the voice against western openness toward Damascus at the expense of the ambitions of the Lebanese people.
On Sunday, Jumblatt has launched a "suspicious" campaign against Syria following months of "calm." He assailed what he called the "Syrian threat" against the independent movement in Lebanon. "The Syrian regime poses the first and last danger on the independent movement in Lebanon," Jumblatt said before the Progressive Socialist Party's General Assembly. He warned that if the so-called "March 14" coalition lost the next parliamentary elections Lebanon would return to Syrian tutelage.
Meanwhile, Jumblatt, famous for political fluctuations, sought to justify his new "strategy," claiming that he was still committed to calm internally. However, he said that his stance toward Syria was implacable. He said that he supported President Michel Suleiman and the cabinet's efforts to implement consensus issues in the national roundtable dialogue.
