A letter by the Federal Bureau of Investigation [FBI] urged prominent civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. to commit suicide, calling him a "filthy, abnormal animal," the New York Times published for the first time on Wednesday.

In the unsigned 1964 letter by an FBI deputy sent to King, the author refers to the Nobel Peace Prize recipient as "evil," a "fraud," and a "dissolute, abnormal moral imbecile."

The author in the end suggests that the leader commit suicide.

The letter also said: "King, like all frauds your end is approaching. You could have been our greatest leader."

One passage further reads: "No person can overcome facts, not even a fraud like yourself...You will find yourself in all your dirt, filth, evil, and moronic talk exposed on the record for all time. I repeat-no person can argue successfully against facts. You are finished."

King, who became known for his advancement of civil rights by using civil disobedience, was assassinated on April 4, 1968 at the age of 39 in Memphis, Tennessee. His death was followed by widespread protests in many US cities.

Moreover, the suicide letter pulled back the curtain on FBI notorious director J. Edgar Hoover's efforts to discredit the civil rights icon as his popularity grew.
