Kahwaji: Lebanese army was informed about Syrian deployment
Source: Nowlebanon.com, 16-10-2008
Army Commander Jean Kahwaji said that the security situation in Lebanon was now well controlled, primarily because the army, with the security forces, had arrested "a number of members of a terrorist cell implicated in the Tripoli bombings."
After meeting with army officials and UNIFIL representatives on Thursday, Kahwaji said that "this valuable achievement" had brought immense relief to all Lebanese and proved that there was "no safe refuge for terrorism in Lebanon and no attack on the army or citizens will pass unpunished."
Kahwaji said that there was a "special stable situation" along the southern borders as a result of the army's active presence, the efforts of UNIFIL and Lebanon's commitment to UNSCR 1701. He said that the ""Israeli" enemy" was still trying to evade UNSCR 1701 through threats and violations of Lebanon's waters and skies, as well as by maintaining its occupation of Shebaa Farms, Kfar Shouba Hills and the Lebanese section of Ghajar village.
Kahwaji also said that the army had been previously informed about the Syrian military deployment along Lebanon's northern borders, which, Kahwaji said, was intended to stop smuggling.
