Assad Warns: Extremist groups in North target Syria, March 14 finance terrorist factions
Source: Nowlebanon.com, 16-10-2008
As-Safir newspaper reported on Friday that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said that Syrian security authorities recently arrested the daughter of Shaker al-Abssi, the leader of the Islamist group Fatah al-Islam which fought Nahr al-Bared War against the army in summer 2007.
He added that she admitted that some plans were being prepared to target Syria and affirmed that the recent clashes that occurred in Yarmouk camp between the Syrian security forces and a "terrorist faction" were not connected to any Palestinian group.
The paper added that Assad told some Arab visitors that fundamentalist and extremist groups in North Lebanon were aiming to make Syria a path between Lebanon and Iraq, and some of them were seen over Syrian territories and "we're not chasing them."
On Damascus bombing in September, he said that Syrian authorities arrested some members of the "terrorist network", which came from an Arab country.
He added that their leader is Syrian and has now been arrested.
He accused March 14 alliance of financing these groups, adding that some regional parties might be also supporting them.
