Hizbullah foreign affairs spokesman Nawaf Moussawi said that Hizbullah's image in the West was untrue. "Hizbullah is portrayed as a terrorist organization, when, in fact, it is a resistance against an "Israeli" attack," he said. Moussawi said that the way Hizbullah was portrayed in the West had obstructed its ability to communicate and make initiatives with Western society.
In a meeting with an EU media delegation composed of representatives from 15 television networks on Friday, Moussawi hailed the delegation's initiative because it was "a chance to look at Hizbullah's version of the truth, without any dishonorable means." Moussawi said that Hizbullah was a Lebanese political party, and "this is the true image with which dialogue should begin."
In response to comments that Hizbullah wanted to control Lebanon and make it an Islamic state, he said, "We are completely committed to the diversity formula, this formula has created a kind of liberty, and has prevented Lebanon from turning into an authoritarian state," he said.
"No one faction in Lebanon can win elections," he said, "the system here is sectarian; accordingly, no matter how powerful a political party becomes it cannot win a majority."
Moussawi said that Hizbullah's relations with Syrian and Iran were an alliance. "They are our allies, and like the US is the ally of "Israel", we have an ally that is Iran. As Britain is an ally of "Israel", Syria is our ally," he said.
