"Reconciliation Shouldn΄t Be Gift to Samir Geagea!"
Source: Al-Manar TV, 24-10-2008
Twenty days on the Maronite MPs meeting at the Maronite League headquarters, no breakthrough seems to have been reached, paving the way for the much awaited reconciliation between the Marada movement and the Lebanese Forces to take place.
Twenty days were full of declarations, developments and infiltrations but nothing seems to have changed. It's right that Lebanese Forces chief Samir Geagea, who rushed to declare "openness" and readiness to meet with the head of the Marada movement former minister Suleiman Franjieh just a few minutes after the MPs meeting, went back many times on his words in order to achieve the reconciliation for reasons that were interpreted by his rivals as merely political and electoral, given that Geagea used to apologize and assail others in one speech, but no progress seems to have been achieved and the reconciliation seems to be now even more difficult than a few days ago after Franjieh told his intimates that he wouldn't work for the reconciliation unless his conditions are accepted.
Moreover, Franjieh said on Friday that reconciliation required "spirit and flavor," which Geagea lacked. After meeting with a delegation from the Syrian Social Nationalist Party (SSNP), Franjieh responded to LF accusations that he was pressured by Syria to change his position, saying, "It is Pakistani pressure, because the Pakistani president has become a Shia and for this reason pressure came this time from Pakistan?"
Meanwhile, Marada sources told Al-Manar that Franjieh's conditions to the reconciliation were submitted to the Maronite League. According to the sources, part of the conditions is announced, while another remains spontaneous. The sources said the conditions are not unfeasible or impossible to achieve, and emphasized that the League would receive the LF response in a few days. The sources pointed out that achieving a reconciliation that would be a "gift to Samir Geagea" was inconceivable.
At the meantime, the Maronite League sources told Al-Manar that it would hold meetings and contacts in the next 48 hours with the concerned parties in an attempt to prepare for the much awaited reconciliation. The sources stressed there was no need to hurry, given that the conflict between the two sides is an old one, recalling that hopes of close results were not high.
