Army Commander Jean Kahwaji said that the army's efforts, along with corporation from Lebanon's security forces, were bringing relief security and stability to Lebanon. Kahwaji said that security in the capital was a top priority for the army, as Beirut brought together all Lebanese and is home Lebanon's primary institutions, which, Kahwaji said, were the foundations of the country.
During a tour of army bases in Beirut and its suburbs on Tuesday, Kahwaji said that the arrests of terrorist cell in Tripoli and a "Israeli" spy network in Bekaa were accomplished through cooperation between the army and the security forces, along with assistance from the Palestinian leadership in the refugee camps. Kahwaji said that the army would continue its pursuit of terrorists and foreign agents, wherever they were. "There will be no safe place for the criminals that have been rejected by the Palestinians and who are considered strangers by the Lebanese," he said.
Kahwaji called for heightened awareness among soldiers, who said should be "highly ready" to confront any possible "Israeli" attack, especially since the "the enemy is still performing maneuvers and increasing its violation of Lebanese lands, which is a declared threat against Lebanon's army, population and resistance." He also called on soldiers prepare themselves for the "serious and professional" safeguarding of the 2009 parliamentary elections, while maintaining equal distance from all factions.
