Hizbullah Deputy Secretary General Sheikh Naim Qassem said Sunday that Lebanon's interest requires establishing essential relations with Syria, which was imposed by the history and geography in addition to the Lebanese constitution and the Taef Accord that have mentioned Syria when they talked about distinguished relations.

Sheikh Qassem indicated that the above mentioned fact made the Lebanese cabinet approve on all the steps taken by Interior Minister Ziad Baroud during his visit to Damascus last Monday regardless some of the strained voices.

His eminence said, "We must salute Interior Minister Mr. Ziad Baroud for his professional and legal stance concerning his proceeding for the Cabinet's decisions during his visit to Syria, and has not done anything contrary to the Cabinet's decision."

He added, "The normal path between Lebanon and Syria must exist for the benefit of Lebanon and none could pressure us out of the country's benefit, however this ongoing tense along some of the parties is related to the lack of study for the changing fact and to the attempt of getting some political interests. But they gain the successive political losses and such deeds could not benefit them."

Speaking in a commemoration in the Berjawi area in the Southern suburb of Beirut on Sunday in front of number of political and religious figures, Sheikh Qassem added that the so-called March 14 was surprised that Syria approved the establishment of diplomatic ties with Lebanon and that it claimed that the Syrian embassy in Lebanon would be an extension of its security services. He said that the March 14 did not have the courage to say that it rejected any bilateral relationship because it knew that these relations were normal and would be mutually beneficial.

Hizbullah Deputy Secretary General also commented on the interfaith conference held by the United Nations in New York saying that he supported interfaith dialogue if it was intended to pave the way for greater communication and agreement, but not if it was designed to forge normal relations with "Israel" and legitimate its presence.

Sheikh Qassem said, "We are with the dialogue however we are against the normalization of relations with "Israel", we are with dialogue but not with giving "Israel" the opportunity to give instruction on relations between Muslims. I would have liked to hear a response on ("Israeli" FM Tsibi) Livni who criticized the whole Arab and Islamic countries because they teach in their mosques God's religion (Islam) that raises up on "Israel's" hatred. So where is the response? Who have said a word against this arrogance?"

His eminence also said that the criminal ("Israeli" President) Shimon Peres was the one who took part in the interfaith dialogue.

Commenting on US President George W. Bush's saying in the conference that he has made a great effort to protect the Muslims in the Middle East, Sheikh Qassem said that Bush has protected Muslims by killing over a million people and turning the region into a flaming zone.

His eminence concluded by recalling Livni's commitment not to allow the Palestinians to go back to their lands within 1948 borders. He wondered what kind of conferences this was and whether it was an interfaith dialogue or a conference to show "Israel's" vision to find a way in order to normalize relations with it.
